Your Transmutational Heart

How to respirate the discomfort of being human

Happy New Moon Time, Loves!

***This month we are trying something new and offering a simple 30 minute video to all our readers in honor of the New Moon and all the intensity we are swimming through. Ordinarily this is a benefit for our paying members, but for the time being I have decided to lift the paywall on offerings like this in the hopes that someone who needs support will find it in a moment of need and that the paywall will not be a barrier. If you know someone who is struggling right now, feel free to share this with them and also watch this video to be guided in an easy Tonglen breathing practice to respirate suffering.

Tonglen is the Buddhist practice of breathing in suffering and allowing our hearts to transmute it so that we can exhale relief and healing.

Traditionally, this technique is offered as an act of service for other’s in the community, but my teacher added an adaptation that really deepens the practice for me.

He suggested starting in close, with yourself.

You then draw a circle in your imagination and invite your loved ones and all those you know who are suffering to walk into the circle. You do this transmutational breath for them and then finally move the circle to an even larger arena, a place on the Earth that is suffering.

You end this practice by returning to yourself and notice simply if your sensations of suffering have changed or not. Without judgement, it will be one of these!

At times like these we need to find ways to remind ourselves of how powerful we actually are. Breathing fresh air into the spaces where there is suffering can help us make room for compassion, gratitude, and understanding to flood into our bodies where old programs are leaving.

So much of what we are experiencing is a process of purging and birthing.

Making room to make way.

So care for yourself, dear ones, and please don’t forget how precious you are!
